The Gospel for Sunday, from Matthew, tells us about Joseph and his supporting role in the story of Jesus’ birth. The Gospel will be dramatized for us by our children. They have been rehearsing a program of reading, singing, playing and colorful dramatization of the birth of Jesus.

2nd Sunday of Advent

Sunday the jarring words of Isaiah and John the Baptist will be heard in our assembly. I hope that we are not too sleepy or jaded to hear them. The words of the prophets are like the check-engine light flashing on our car’s dashboard. Something is wrong with the engine. The prophets say, something is wrong with our hearts and with our communities. Maybe scheduled maintenance is all that is needed (word and sacrament worship), maybe our desires, our ambitions, our activities are out of alignment with what we know we should be thinking about, and doing with our time. The prophets want to get our attention so that gospel promises can reach us again.

The choir rehearses at 8:45 am. New singers are always welcome. Advent, leading up to Christmas, is a good time to join the choir.

1st Sunday of Advent

Now we turn to the blue season of Advent. The changes of the season are meant to remind us that God is with us in all seasons and stages of life, therefore we are hopeful people. Our faith calls us out of sadness and despair. We expect a presence that will save us from everything that harms our spirits and our bodies. We light candles to show our hopeful Christian natures. Tomorrow we will light the first candle on the Advent wreath. The entrance rite will be a little different tomorrow. Instead of the usual kyrie and hymn of praise, we will sing a verse of an Advent hymn, hear a reading to focus our minds, light the first candle on the wreath, then give our individual spirits a moment of freedom through supportive silence before we continue with the prayer of the day.

The choir rehearses at 8:45 am.

Andrea Vogt is home from college. She will play music of Bach on her violin.

Remember to fill in your pledge cards, and take a bookmark made by Carrie Munford’s faith-formation class.

Thank you to those of you who have communicated with Kim Canning about your child’s attendance at the Christmas program rehearsals and program. I have heard from two of you that your child would like to play music during the program. If there are others, let me know Sunday.
